Job Application

The activities mentioned in the previous page will help you establish credibility and reliability, increase your knowledge of work and widen your contacts. You can add to your employable skills by short, long, part time or correspondence courses in subjects such as computing, word processing, accounting and languages.

Examples of what a good job application can use

A clerical job in a hospital led to writing for the hospital magazine, which led to entry on a journalism course which led to a job on a local paper.

Three years in Zambia was followed by a year travelling in Australia. A week's voluntary work in a marketing department then led to an appointment as an Appeals Organizer in a national children's charity. (There was a great deal of networking and many rejections in between.)

Six months' clerical work in an insurance company, with an evening course in accountancy, led to appointment as a trainee cost accountant in an industrial company.

Job applications

Three months as a runner for a video production company led to voluntary work with an independent film editor, which led to acceptance on the major film editing training scheme.

None of these routes will apply to you. However, it is likely that for you as for most graduates as Francis Bacon said "The road to great place lies through a winding stair".
