Talk about performance, having a chance to contribute (be specific about the kind of contribution).

Make sure they correspond to the job and that they show you are hoping to stay with the employer.

Ask what the range was that they were thinking of offering. Or give your own RANGE, then negotiate based on your list of other considerations (flex time, vacation, benefits, early consideration for a raise, etc.).

Always try to tell stories or give examples of your PAST behavior that relate to the duties of the job. Tell what you accomplished, what the result was. Quantify it, whenever you can. Relate it to the bottom line or overall success of the company.
Show that it was recognized by others (boss, customers, co-workers, in performance reviews, by letters, etc.), not just by you.
