What is the purpose of an interview?

The purpose of an interview is to allow the employer to get to know the interviewee (candidate for employment) better. In the past, the interviewer is the one with power in an interview. The interviewer gets to ask the interviewee whatever interview questions he or she wants to ask. The interviewer often has a list of interview questions he or she wants to ask in each interview.

Nowadays, the purpose of an interview is really two-fold. The first purpose of an interview is for the benefit of the employer. The second purpose of an interview is for the benefits of the potential employee. Nowadays, in a good interview with a good employer and colleagues, the interviewer often asks the candidate if he or she has any questions about the company, position, job, etc. Nowadays, there are so many employers and each employer is looking for the best candidate.

What does an employer wants out of an interview?

During the interview, when the interviewer is going through a list of interview questions he or she has, the interviewer is trying to establish key factors to determine if the interviewee is a potential hire. Some of the key areas and reasons an interviewer looks for are:

  • ability to do the job
  • problem solving skills
  • ability to get the job done in a timely fashion
  • teamwork (if teamwork environment)
  • getting along with other co workers
  • suitability at the workplace
